Cultural do's and don'ts:

WITH SOUTHEAST ASIANS:
Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam
 
DO:
1. Be less direct than usual in your communication.
2. Deal with people without showing emotion.
3. Recognize the group is more important than the individual.
4. Show respect.
5. Understand that laughter can be a sign of nervousness.
6. Recognize the importance of status.
7. Understand that sometimes a better job title is more motivation than increased salary.
8. Cultivate a conflict-free environment.
9. Know that personal relationships may take precedence over work.
10. Make an effort to understand more about their respective cultural values.
 
DON'T:
1. Be very direct in communication style.
2. Single out anyone in front of others.
3. Speak loudly or use unfamiliar idioms or slang.
4. Get visibly angry.
5. Expect employees to go beyond stated duties.
6. Allow anyone to "lose face" (be embarrassed).
7. Touch people (especially on the head).
8. Be confrontational.
9. Expect individuals to reveal what they are thinking.
10. Expect decisions to be made quickly.
   
 

The key to improved harmony within a multicultural workforce is not to memorize do and don't lists, but to comprehend their rationale. While interesting, the above do/don't lists are not culture - only its symptoms.

What creates this behavior? Why do people react differently to the same thing? How can a gesture be interpreted positively by people from one place and negatively by people from another? The answer lies in human culture.
